Truck driver from Belarus arrested in Romania after Galati hit-and-run

10 April 2017

A truck registered in Belarus hit a car and two cyclists on a street in Galati last weekend, and then left the scene of the accident. The driver is now under preventive arrest.

The local police tried to stop the truck after it hit the cyclists, but the driver ignored the police’s sound signals, and kept driving, hitting another car. After a long chase, the police finally managed to catch the driver, who was later identified as a 29-year-old man from Belarus. He was drunk when the incident happened.

At first, the police detained him. Later, the judges of Galati Court admitted the prosecutors’ request to place the man under preventive arrest for 30 days, reports local News.ro. He is now investigated for attempted murder, assault, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The driver admitted that he had drunk half of a vodka bottle before getting behind the wheel.

“He said he was very angry due to a situation at work. He admitted that he tried to escape the police and the citizens by any means, and acknowledge the way he had been driving. He is aware of having committed serious crimes, but has no other justification,” said Liliana Istrate, spokesperson of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to Galati Court.

The translator who attended the man’s questioning said that he regrets what happened.
