Over 6.4 million Romanians use the Internet daily, statistics show
The number of Internet users aged 16 to 74 in Romania reached some 10.6 million in 2016. Thus, almost 70% of the adult Romanians used the internet at least once, up by 1.2 percentage points compared to 2015, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Over 85% of the 10.6 million Internet users went online at least once in the last three months, which makes the number of current Internet users over 9 million. Moreover, 71% of the current Internet users, namely over 6.4 million Romanians, go online daily or almost daily, the same statistics show.
Some 92% of the Romanians aged between 16 and 34 use the Internet. The percentage drops with the age, to 75.5% of those aged 35 to 54, reaching only 38.4% for people aged 55-74. In terms of gender, 72.2% of men use the Internet, the number being higher than the one registered in women’s case, of 67.2%.
Almost two out of three households in Romania (65%) have access to the Internet in 2016, the number being four percentage points higher than the one registered in 2015. Two thirds of the households with Internet access are in urban areas and only a third are in rural Romania.
More than four in five households in Bucharest-Ilfov region have access to the Internet, while the lowest shares are registered in South-Muntenia (58%) and North-East (57.1%) regions.
Most of the connections used to access the Internet are the fixed broadband connections (86.8%), followed by mobile broadband connections (43.2%), and narrowband connections (10.3%).
