U.S. Ambassador to Romania, against measures weakening rule of law

20 January 2017

Any legislative proposal that weakens the rule of law affects all Romanians, regardless of their political preferences, said U.S. Ambassador to Romania Hans Klemm in an interview for local news agency News.ro.

“We do not consider appropriate any measures that weaken the rule of law in Romania,” Klemm said.

He was referring to the two draft proposals on amending the country’s criminal laws issued this week.

“We expect all institutions in Romania to try to strengthen the nation's fight against corruption,” said the US diplomat.

Any change in Romania's anti-corruption legislation must be carried out through a transparent, fully consultative process, the US Ambassador added. He also said that the U.S. strongly supports Laura Codruta Kovesi, the chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate as well as all the institutions fighting corruption in Romania.

“Their work is vital to Romania’s future,” he said.
