What do Romanians watch most on YouTube?

19 May 2015

A Latino song and a funny version of the same song top YouTube’s most watched list in Romania.

Colombian singer J Balvin’s hit Tranquila has been the most watched music video on YouTube in Romania, in the last ten years.

A parody version of J Balvin’s song created by four Romanian comedians (Noaptea Tarziu – Late at Night project) has been the most watched non-music video in Romania in the same period. The video is called Sunt un Cocalar which translates into “I’m A Cocalar”. “Cocalar” roughly means low level gangster, describing people who think they are cool, slick and very important, without actually being so. The video has 9.6 million hits on YouTube (as of May 19, 2015).

Google celebrated 10 years since YouTube launched its first version. On this occasion, Google released the rankings of the most popular videos on YouTube in Romania during this period.

The second most viewed music video in Romania was South Korean artist PSY’s Gangnam Style, which also topped the international YouTube ranking, with more than 2.33 billion hits. Third came Romanian singer Andra with her 2013 hit Inevitabil va fi bine (Inevitably all will be well), which has gathered more than 30 million hits, overall, since its launch.

Indila’s Derniere Danse, Enrique Iglesias’ Bailando (the Spanish version) and Michel Telo’s Ai Se Tu Te Pego have also been popular with Romanian YouTube users. Four Romanian songs complete the top 10: Cai verzi pe pereti by Smiley, Alex Velea and Don Baxter, Cum se face by Alina Eremia, Pe aripi de vant by Delia and Kaira, and Din vina ta, by Alex Velea.

In the non-music videos ranking, the second most viewed is a commercial for baby shampoo, and the third is a pamphlet music video by comedy group Comedis, which is called KK-MAKA (The Crisis Anthem).

YouTube has over 7 million unique visitors each month in Romania. The platform’s Romanian version launched in April 2013.

The only two Romanian YouTube channels with more than one million subscribers are Cat Music and InnaRomania.
