Spaniard wins last edition of Romania’s BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis tournament

25 April 2016

Spanish tennis player Fernando Verdasco won the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Romania, after defeating French Lucas Pouille 6-3, 6-2.

The Romanian duo Horia Tecau/Florin Mergea won the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over the team made of Australian Chris Guccione and Brazilian Andre Sa. Last year’s winners were also Romanians: Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur.

This is Horia Tecau’s fourth victory at the Romanian tournament. In 2012, he won the doubles final together with Swedish tennis player Robert Lindstedt, in 2013 with the Belorussian Max Mirnîi, and in 2014 with Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer.

Both the single and doubles finals took place on Monday, April 24, at Arenele BNR in Bucharest.

This was the last edition of the ATP tournament in Bucharest as local businessman Ion Tiriac gave up the license because Romania doesn't have a proper tennis court to host it. The main court of the BNR tennis arena has been closed because of safety issues so this year's tournament took place on a secondary court.
