Wizz Air carries 23% more passengers to and from Romania in 2016

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air continued to increase its activity in Romania last year, carrying over 5.5 million passengers to and from Romanian airports, 23% more than in 2015.

The airline opened two new bases in Romania last year, in Iasi and Sibiu, and added two new airports to its local network, namely the ones in Satu Mare and Suceava. Wizz Air currently operates from ten Romanian airports.

For this year, the company plans to add new aircraft to the bases in Cluj-Napoca and Craiova, and will introduce 15 new routes that will connect Romania to nine countries. In 2017, Wizz Air will have 22 aircraft at its bases in Romania, including five Airbus A321 with 230 seats. Its local team will also increase to 750 employees.

The airline’s network in Romania comprises 133 routes, including a domestic flight that links the capital Bucharest to Cluj-Napoca, in Transylvania.

Overall, Wizz Air carried 23 million passengers in 2016, 19% more compared to the year before. At the end of the year, the company was connecting 134 destinations from 40 countries, with a total of 519 routes on sale. Its team is made of more than 3,000 employees.
