High level political name calling for Romania: President calls PM a 'kitten' and 'compulsive liar'
A new chapter in the President – Prime Minister battle of words in Romania. The quarrel was recently reignited after what seemed to be a calmer state of play between the the two. Just days away from the upcoming general elections, the president Traian Basescu called the Prime Minister – who is running for a seat in the Romanian Parliament representing Targu Jiu – a 'kitten' and a 'compulsive liar'. The verbal attack was expanded to Crin Antonescu, the leader of the other opposition part – the National Liberal Party. The president said the PM is a compulsive liar, just as Antonescu is a narcoleptic.
Basescu referred to the double speak he alleges the PM uses, who agrees with him during private talks, but tells a different story and attacks the president to the public and abroad.
After the president Traian Basescu attended the European Council summit in Brussels last week, the PM Victor Ponta said Romania's European path will be much better without Basescu, a president who 'sold us all to hang on to his seat'.
The president had previously asked the Prime Minister Victor Ponta to give the same speech at home and abroad and be honest, referring to the PM's statements in Europe about lessons learned and about working well with the president, while campaigning against the president at home. The PM was quick to reply via the media: “I liked the comment about saying one thing at home and another abroad. Well, at home he (e.n Basescu) is the all mighty, but when he came from Brussels he was on his knees, he did not dare to open his mouth and say something for Romania, for the future of our country.”
