Hotel owner in Romania: All inclusive system leads to obesity and alcoholism

15 March 2012

An all-inclusive system for hotels in Romania would lead to obesity and alcoholism, said Mohammad Murad, the head of the Employers' Union in Romanian Tourism. He responded to Tourism Minister Cristian Petrescu, who previously said the all inclusive system would increase the number of tourists in Romania. “I am a doctor and I can tell you that the all-inclusive system damages health. It leads to obesity, high alcohol consumption and wastage,” said Murad. He also owns several hotels on the Romanian seaside and in Bucharest.

Romania's Tourism minister Cristian Petrescu said that hotel owners make more money from food when not selling all-inclusive packages, but this system would bring them more tourists. “I think hotel owners lose tourists, but if they want to keep the hotels like this, out of the all inclusive offers, and their calculations show it is worth it, it is their business,” said the minister. He went on to say hotel owners should understand that a lower profit from more people equals a higher profit from fewer tourists.

Romania's seaside has suffered from a lack of tourists in recent years, and hotel owners complain that Romanians are choosing the Bulgarian seaside instead, where hoteliers have provided all inclusive options.
