The Romanian Government will publish the list of tenants, which include civil service members, government officials etc, in all houses and apartments owned by the state and managed by RA-APPS, a government agency that handles state owned real estate assets. PM Victor Ponta recently made the announcement, adding that the Government might decide whether there are too many tenants or if the rent is too low.

End – last year, the Government expanded the list of beneficiaries of state-owned houses, to include heads of departments, deputies for general secretaries and general managers in the Central Administration.

The Government's Secretary General is currently working on the list of tenants, which should be soon published, the PM said.

This is not the first time a Government has wanted to make changes in the way RA-APPPS works, but it is so far the first attempt to disclose all names of tenants. In November 2011, the then PM Emil Boc said he wanted the government to raise substantial funds via the sale of 733 out of 1,000 state owned properties, including retail space, houses, villas and apartments.

By law, if the state cannot offer a house at a lower rent from RA-APPS for someone entitled to work accommodation, the person can rent on the free market and be reimbursed by the state.
