Romanian students plan to cycle home from UK to support environmental causes
A pair of Romanian students studying in the UK are planning to cycle home this summer to raise money for environmental protection NGO WWF. Dragos Hrituleac and Tiberiu Patras are both from Botosani in North-Eastern Romania, between Suceava and the Moldovan border, and they plan to complete the 3,000 km journey in 30 days.
They are hoping to raise money for and awareness of Romanian rivers and the unique habitats they support, which according to the pair are under serious threat from pollution, dam building and infrastructure work, as well as over-fishing. In particular, the two Romanian students want to increase awareness of the plight of the Danube sturgeon, which is considered critically endangered, the protection by legislation of river and wetland habitats and the damaging effects of small scale hydroelectric power plants on the areas in which they are built.
It's a long road to Botosani and before Dragos and Tiberiu begin, there's a lot of work to do. They are looking for support, both financial and otherwise, to make their fund-raising journey possible.
Dragos Hrituleac is a Conservation and Ecology student at Worcester University, while Tiberiu Patras studies Motorcycle Engineering at Coventry University.
