Romania speeds up issuance of over 21,000 new identity cards on referendum day
Over 21,000 new identity cards were released by 13.00 Sunday ( July 29 ) at a national level during the presidential impeachment referendum day, said Interior Ministry spokesman Marius Militaru in a press statement. This was lower than the 30,000 new ID cards issued on the local elections day earlier this year, in June. Then, authorities issued 30,000 ID cards.
The new identity cards were released within an emergency procedure to allow citizens to vote in the referendum.
In Bucharest, over 2,500 new ID cards were issued. The national citizen database offices were open until 22,00 on Sunday, the day of the referendum, when voting ended at 23,00.
