Some 15,000 people attended special screenings in cinemas across the country in honor of Romanian director Sergiu Nicolaescu. He died on Thursday, January 3, aged 82 at a the Elias Hospital in Bucharest. The hospital announced that he had died as a result of severe cardiac and pulmonary complications following a recent operation.

Nicolaescu is best known for his historical epics, which included films on Romanian leader Mihai the Brave and the ancient inhabitants of the region, The Dacians. Entry to the screenings was free and included among the films shown were Dacii/Les Guerriers (Dacians), Revanşa/Revenge, Ultimul cartuş/The Last Cartridge and Nemuritorii/Immortals.
