2017 gross box office goes up 10% in Romania
The gross box office in Romania amounted to RON 266 million (EUR 57.2 million) in 2017, up RON 25 million (EUR 5.3 million) from 2016. This is a 10.3% year-on-year increase, according to data from the European Audiovisual Observatory.
The number of tickets sold rose to 13.9 million last year, up 6.5% from 13 million the previous year.
Overall, the gross box office in the EU member states reached an estimated EUR 7.02 billion in 2017, a slight 0.3% drop on the previous year. The box office growth was strong in Central and Eastern Europe, up 19% in the Slovak Republic, 15.2% in Lithuania, and 10.3% in Romania. A moderate growth was recorded in Germany, of 3.2%, and in the UK, of 4%.
The films made by the US studios dominated the EU box office chart, representing 19 out of the top 20 films in 2017. Despicable Me 3 took the first spot, with 32.3 million admissions. It was followed by Beauty and the Beast with 29.8 million admissions and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi with 28.8 million admissions.
