Accidents in Romania which involve cars registered in Bulgaria went up 20 times in 2010, compared to 2005, according to Ionel Dima, general manager of Avus International Insurance Broker. There were 3,000 accidents involving cars registered in Bulgaria last year in Romania.

“Romanians register their cars in Romania for various reasons, all connected to money: insurance rates and all taxes are lower. In 2005, there were 150 accidents in Romania which involved cars registered in Bulgaria, in 2010, we had over 3,000,” said Ionel Dima.

Five years ago, cars registered in Italy was ranking first in the top of accidents caused by cars registered in other countries, while Bulgaria has outranked it last year. Italy used to be the main country of choice for Romanians looking to work abroad and many of them returned to their home country with cars registered in Italy.

According to data from the Environmenta Ministry, which taxes cars based on their pollution level, around 3 percent of the cars in Romania have been registered in Bulgaria.
