British aircraft from Romanian military base, sent to intercept Russian bombers

26 July 2017

A Typhoon combat aircraft, stationed at the Romanian military base Mihail Kogalniceanu and owned by the British Royal Air Force, was sent on Tuesday to intercept two Russian bombers detected above the Black Sea, according to the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The Russian military jets were flying over the western Black Sea heading south near the NATO air space. The Typhoon monitored them in accordance with the NATO Enhanced Air Policing (eAP) mission the RAF are conducting in Romania, according to RAF.

NATO’s Air Surveillance and Control System had previously found several tracks of non-NATO military aircraft flying over the Black Sea.

Four British Typhoon combat planes have been stationed at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base since May 2017. They carry out aerial patrol missions over the Black Sea.
