French telecom equipment producer Alcatel-Lucent will modernize telecom operator Orange Romania’s 4G network, helping the mobile carrier increase its data transport capacity. The value of the contract hasn’t been released.

Orange launched its 4G network in 2012, in Bucharest. The operator’s 4G coverage now spans over 70% of the country’s population and 96% of the urban one.

Alcatel-Lucent has been active in Romania since 1991. It has offices in Timisoara and Bucharest and has over 1,500 employees. Its turnover dropped by almost 7% last year compared to 2013, reaching EUR 81.2 million, whereas its net profit rose by 1.2% to EUR 4.5 million.

Orange Romania is the largest telecom operator on the local market based on its turnover and number of customers. In 2014, its turnover amounted to almost EUR 1 billion, down 0.4% compared to the previous year.
