Ambassador Gitenstein: U.S. will answer questions about visas when Romania's economic situation improves

25 October 2010

U.S. Ambassador to Romania Mark Gitenstein (in picture) said that he will give an answer to the question when will the Romanians be able to enter the U.S. without a visa as soon as the Romanian economy improves. He would like to see this wish fulfilled during the two years left of his current tenure as Ambassador, Gitenstein has also said.

"As soon as you tell me that the country economy goes well, I will given an answer to this question. I hope this will happen very soon, for I would like to see it happening before the two years that I am left to spend in Romania as Ambassador end," he told the Pro TV channel on Sunday, asked when will Romanians be able to travel to U.S. without needing a visa. The US program which allows countries enter the US territory without a visa for 90 days is called the Visa Waiver.

He also said that it was "a good thing" that the refusal rate for visa allocation has fallen in this time of economic crisis and after the simplification of the mechanisms. Gitenstein also said that the rejection rate is still quite high also because of the fact that Romanian citizens usually apply for visas not once but countless times.
