American, Romanian officials talk about faster Visa Waiver process for Romania

30 April 2014

Including Romania as fast as possible on the American Visa Waiver program was one of the discussions topics between the deputy of the American State Secretary for European Affairs Assistant, Hoyt Yee, and Romania’s Foreign Affairs State Secretary Bogdan Aurescu.

The two met yesterday in Bucharest, for a political and military work session of the Romania – US Task Force, given the worrying political and military movements in Romania’s vicinity. The American Charge of Affairs to Romania Duane Butcher also attended the meeting.

Romania’s refusal rate on visas for the US dropped to 11.5 percent in 2013, compared to 17 percent in 2012, recent data from the US Department of State reveals. The drop is even bigger compared to 2010, when the refusal rate was almost a quarter.

Romania has been trying to enter the Visa Waiver program, which would allow its citizens to enter the US and stay for 90 days without requiring a visa.
