Another Romanian businessman goes to jail: Corneliu Iacubov gets 7-year stretch
Romanian courts are on a roll, with a new high flyer conviction recently made. Businessman Corneliu Iacubov was sentenced to seven years in jail in the Rafo Onesti case. The High Court of Cassation and Justice rejected the appeal, so the jail sentence is definitive.
In the trial, which started seven years ago, Iacubov was accused of having prejudiced Rafo Onesti, together with three other people, and having caused a loss of some EUR 5.4 million between 2000 and 2003. Toader Găurean, the other person convicted in this case, got six years in jail.
Iacubov is not the first well known Romanian businessman jailed this year. Ilie Carabulea, owner of Banca Carpatica, went to jail earlier this year for corruption – more about it here, while media owner Sorin Ovidiu Vantu was recently incarcerated for blackmail- read more here.
Several politicians were also convicted this year. Former Prime Minister Nastase is currently in jail and faces two years of incarceration. More about it here.
