Another top political scalp for Romania's anti-corruption squad: VP of intelligence services arrested

Romania's anti-corruption directorate (DNA) has announced another high profile arrest. This time it's the parliamentary vice-president of Romania's intelligence services (SRI), Ion Stan. A member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), he is accused of selling political influence. The case centers around an offer the politician made to help win contracts with the state for a businessman in return for RON 1.3 million (just under EUR 300,000 at the average rate for 2012). Stan is currently being questioned.

Ion Stan has been a member of the Romanian Parliament since 2000. Throughout his time in parliament Stan has been part of the Permanent Joint Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate for the exercise of parliamentary control over Romania's intelligence services (SRI). He held two other positions in the Joint Commission before becoming vice-president in 2008, a role has been in ever since.
