Anticorruption prosecutors seize Romanian billionaire’s assets
Romania’s anticorruption prosecutors have seized some buildings and land worth EUR 2 million belonging to the company Interagro owned by Romanian billionaire Ioan Niculae.
The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) will also seize the assets belonging to Intervitt, another company owned by Niculae.
Prosecutors are investigating Niculae for buying influence, abetting tax evasion, and abetting money laundering. The damage is estimated at EUR 2 billion.
In April this year, Niculae has been sentenced to two years and six months in jail for illegally financing the presidential campaign of Mircea Geoana, in 2009. Niculae is currently serving the prison sentence.
He’s also investigated in another case for influencing state authorities to sell him cheap gas for his fertilizer plants.
In 2014, Niculae was the richest person in Romania, according to the local Forbes 500 Billionaires 2014.
