April inflation sets new low in Romania, increase in egg prices counterbalanced by cheap potatoes

11 May 2012

Romania's inflation rate was of only 0.07 percent in April this year, below expectations, while the annual inflation rate stood at 1.8 percent, a new historic minimum for the country.

Food prices were down 0.1 percent in April compared to the previous month, while the prices of non-food products and services were up 0.2 percent.

The biggest increase in price in April was for eggs – plus 16 percent. Potatoes were again Romania's inflation star, being 3.6 percent cheaper, while for other food products, the drops in price were below 1 percent.

In March, the annual inflation rate was of 2.4 percent, setting a new historic minimum at the time. Consumer prices in March were 0.4 percent higher than in February this year.

The Romanian Central Bank (BNR) lifted the inflation prognosis in February from 3 to 3.2 percent, and BNR governor Mugur Isarescu recently said the increase of public wages will have only a marginal impact on inflation.
