Austrian consortium wins EUR 675 mln railway contract in Romania
An association of Austrian companies has won the contracts for the refurbishment of two railway sections in central Romania that are part of the Rhine-Danube corridor.
The Brasig Strabag – Swietelsky consortium will modernize the railway sections between Brasov and Apata and Cata – Sighisoara with a total length of 86 kilometers. The value of this contract amounts to RON 3.14 billion (EUR 675 million), VAT not included, according to the state railways company CFR.
The costs of this project are covered from EU funds and from the state budget and the execution period is four years. Once the two sections will be modernized, they will allow passenger trains to travel at speeds of up to 160 km per hour and freight trains at 120 km per hour.
CFR recently published its development strategy for the 2018-2022 period, according to which the company needs to invest EUR 12.2 billion in developing its infrastructure.
