Authorities babble about Romania's high altitude road Transalpina opening for traffic

08 July 2014

Local and central authorities cannot agree on whether to officially open the high-altitude road Transalpina, as work hasn't been completed on the road and the construction company is currently insolvent.

Dumitru Cornoiu, the prefect of Valcea county where the road is located says Transalpina can be open for traffic. He also says that there have been discussions with the head of Romania’s roads authority CNADNR and the dangerous spots on the road will be marked accordingly, reports local Digi24. According to him, drivers will not be fined if taking this road.

On the other hand however, CNADNR says the road is dangerous for drivers and it can’t assume the official opening of the mountain road, as this should be done by the construction company, currently under insolvency.

The Ranca-Sebes section of the Transalpina road is currently under construction because work hasn't been yet completed, reports Digi24.

At an altitude of 2,145 meters, DN67C, also known as Transalpina, is the highest altitude road in Romania. The other high altitude road in Romania is Transfagarasan.
