Authority for Animal Surveillance opens new shelter for stray dogs near Bucharest
The Authority for Animal Surveillance and Protection ASPA has opened a new shelter for stray dogs in Bragadiru commune, near Bucharest.
“The shelter in Bragadiru, developed with the support of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, has a current capacity of 1,600 places, with the possibility to be further expanded to 2,500 places,” said Razvan Bancescu, ASPA coordinator.
Nine prisoners are currently working at the shelter under a contract concluded with ASPA, according to the director of the Social Reintegration Department, Ioana Mihaela Morar.
“Under the plan to manage stray dogs in Bucharest, 1,053 dogs were captured in December 2013, and 1,011 were adopted,” reads a statement of the Bucharest City Hall.
Also, the number of people bitten by dogs without owner in Bucharest dropped to over 240 cases in December 2013, from 702 in the same month of 2012.
