BBC buys Romanian talent show format to broadcast it in the UK
British media group BBC has ordered a kids talent show based on a Romanian format, which it will broadcast on CBBC, a TV channel dedicated to children. It is the first time when a show from Romania was ordered in the UK.
“Small World IFT has secured a UK commission for Mom Made Me a Star, the musical reality talent format from Romania’s Media Factory, as digital channel CBBC orders a new ten-part local version,” reads a Small World IFT statement.
Mom Made Me a Star (M-a facut mama artist) originally aired on Romanian TV station Prima TV in 2012. The format follows eight talented teenage singers who try to make it in the music business, and the dramatic reality of the mothers behind them. Participants take part in challenges, aiming to grab one of the three spots that give them the chance to perform in the show's final.
CBBC will air the show in the UK under the name Got What is Takes?. The show will include ten 30-minute episodes.
“We’re delighted to announce this major new commission from CBBC, which marks the first ever order of a Romanian format in the UK. Romania is a hotbed for creativity and we’re seeing fantastic success on the international stage with formats originating there – for example, Media Factory’s Miss Country Girl, which has already been licensed to China, Thailand and Ukraine,” said Luci Burnley, Senior Vice President Formats at Small World IFT.
Rize USA produces the series for CBBC. The show is to be launched early next year.
The Got What it Takes? format will be sold internationally by Small World IFT, a company founded in 2005 by Tim and Colleen Crescenti.
Media Factory was founded by Romanian entrepreneurs Marius Toader and Monica Şenchiu.
