Young Canadian player of Romanian origin reaches Indian Wells semifinals

14 March 2019

Canadian 18-year old tennis player Bianca Andreescu has had a fairytale run at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells this year, where she reached the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Andreescu beat Spanish star Garbine Muguruza 6-0, 6-1 in just 52 minutes

This is Andreescu’s third WTA semifinal this year after she also played the final in Aukland and reached the semifinals in Acapulco.

In the Indian Wells semifinals, Andreescu will play against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, No. 6 in the WTA ranking.

Bianca Andreescu, who was born in Canada from Romanian parents, started the year as No. 152 in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world to reach No. 60 before Indian Wells. Her new performance will take her to Top 40.

Andreescu, who has won 31 of her last 34 matches, says the secret to her success is mental discipline and meditation. “I wake up every morning and the first thing I do is I meditate,” she told WTAtennis.com. “I feel like a lot of people work on the physical part of things, but I think the mental part is the most important because it controls your whole body, right?”
