Biggest painting by Nicolae Tonitza, auctioned this week
Romanian painter Nicolae Tonitza's painting 'Golgota' is up for sale and will be auctioned on November 18 by Artmark within the 12+1 Impressionist Masterpieces from Private Collection auction, which will take place at the Ghika Palace (5 Doamna Ghica St.), from 20,00 hours.
Tonitza's painting was returned to his heirs in 2009, after a series of law suits. The painting was on display for ten years at the Romanian National Art Museum. The painting is estimated to value between EUR 100,000 and EUR 150,000 and is the biggest in size ever to be auctioned on the Romanian market. It covers 1 sqm. Toniza created the Golgota painting after he was released from the Kirjali, Bulgaria concentration camp in 1918. Other Toniza paintings have sold for more than EUR 100,000 in the past. In December 2008, the painting called “Girl with pink ribbon” sold for EUR 120,000.
The Thursday auction will also feature paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Ion Theodorescu-Sion, Lucian Grigorescu, Samuel Mützner. The auction will also include Romanian and European sculptures.
