Biggest retailer in Romania sees higher turnover in 2016

Kaufland Romania, the largest local retailer, recorded a turnover of EUR 2.13 billion last year. By comparison, the company saw a turnover of EUR 2 billion in 2015, up 14.7% year-on-year.

The German group saw a 58% annual increase in its profit last year to EUR 146 million. In 2016, Kaufland's contribution to Romania's state budget was over EUR 140 million, local Wall-street.ro reports.

The company currently has a local network of 115 hypermarkets. It recorded 112 stores at the end of 2016. The retailer invested over EUR 110 million in modernizing and expanding its network last year.

Kaufland remained one of the largest employers in the country. About 14,070 Romans worked in the company in 2016, up 6% over 2015. Kaufland Romania increased the gross minimum salary of its employees to RON 2,000 last year.
