Traditional smoked fish from Romania could be protected in the EU

31 October 2016

The smoked Danube shad (Scrumbia de Dunare afumata), a traditional dish in Romania, could be recognized at European level by receiving the status of Protected Geographical Indication (IGP), according to the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry.

The product’s file was sent to the EU for analysis.

The smoked Danube shad is produced through a method of salting and cold smoking, which is specific to its geographical area of origin.

The Agriculture Ministry’s press release showed that Romania’s “gastronomic and natural potential” could lead to the development of rural areas.

Romania currently has three products that are recognized at EU level, namely Telemeaua de Ibanesti (The Ibanesti Salted Cheese), Magiunul de prune Topoloveni (Topoloveni Plum Jam), and the Sibiu Salami (Salamul de Sibiu).
