31 August 2015

Five movies have managed to break the EUR 1 million mark in box office revenues in Romania, in the first eight months of this year, thus confirming their international blockbuster status. These five movies drew in over a quarter of the total number of movie spectators during the analyzed period and got 27% of the total revenues, according to box office data published by local movie website cinemagia.ro.

The biggest hit in Romanian cinemas was Fast and Furious 7, the last movie starring Paul Walker, which drew over 650,000 spectators and managed to rake in over EUR 2.5 million in ticket sales. This makes Furious 7 the second most successful movie to run in Romania, after Avatar. The action movie, starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, is also second worldwide in terms of revenues this year, with more than USD 1.5 billion.

The animation Minions was second in terms of revenues in Romania in the first eight months. It sold over 382,000 tickets worth more than EUR 1.6 million.

Fifty Shades of Grey, the erotic drama based on E. L. James best-selling novel, came third. It had 317,000 spectators and grossed almost EUR 1.3 million in revenues.

Superhero blockbuster The Avengers: Age of Ultron came fourth, with 233,000 spectators and EUR 1.11 million in revenues, while Jurassic World was fifth, with almost 230,000 tickets sold worth EUR 1.1 million. Jurassic World is this year’s box office leader worldwide, with over USD 1.6 billion in revenues.

The hierarchy may change in the next five months as there are still a few highly anticipated releases towards the end of the year. Among these are the new James Bond movie - Spectre (premieres on November 6), the final movie of The Hunger Games series (November 20), and Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18).
