BNR issues new coin to celebrate Aurel Vialcu aircraft centennial

25 October 2010

The Romanian Central Bank (BNR) has issued two metallic coins to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the first flight of an aircraft engineered by Aurel Vlaicu. The two coins, of 50 bani each, can be used in parallel with the existing 50 bani coins. One of the coins, the collectors' item, was issued in 5,000 copies and is sold for RON 8 per item. Both the commemoration coin and the collectors' item have the same design.

BNR has also issued a set of coins to celebrate 150 years from the creation of the Alexandru Iona Cuza University in Iasi. The set includes all existing Romanian coins currently under circulation, plus a round silver medal dedicated to the celebration. BNR has issued 1,000 of these sets, which sell for RON 155 (without VAT).

BNR has also recently issued a coin dedicated to the centennial of the first jet aircraft made by Henri Coanda. Read about Henri Coanda in our Famous Romanians series here.

The special coins will be sold from BNR's offices in Bucharest, Cluj, Iasi and Timis.  To see Romania's coins and notes under circulation, go here.  For a full list of BNR's numismatic series, go here.
