Romania's central bank, ruling party and Govt. make peace after 3-hour talk
The Romanian Central Bank BNR governor Mugur Isarescu met the ruling party leader Liviu Dragnea and Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on Thursday, May 3, for a three-hour long discussion.
The meeting took place in Dragnea’s office at the Chamber of Deputies.
Liviu Dragnea, who is also the head of the Chamber of Deputies and who had previously said he was worried about the ROBOR interest rate hike and about the price increase, said after this meeting that the Social Democrat Party PSD had no intention to “take over BNR, which was a healthy and important institution." The Government and BNR agreed they can keep inflation within the agreed targets and will continue to collaborate.
The recent tensions between the BNR on the one hand, and the ruling party and Government, on the other hand, triggered Romanian president Klaus Iohannis to propose a mediation. The president asked both the BNR governor and the PM for meetings. The PM denied there was any conflict between the BNR and the Government and canceled the meeting with the president. Instead, she met the BNR governor directly, together with the PSD leader, the Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici, and PM counselor Darius Valcov.
