British Evo magazine goes on Romanian roadtrip to find the best driving road: Transfagarasan or Transalpina?

06 February 2014

Journalists from the British car magazine Evo came to Romania to test the famous high altitude road Transfagarasan, but they ended up contradicting Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson in what is the best road for driving.

Henry Catchpole from the Evo magazine drove a Jaguar F-type V8S on the Transfagarasan, and concluded that the road looks 'absolutely amazing', and it is 'unbelievable'. But his trip on Romania's highest road Transalpina was even more impressive, and convinced him that the Transalpina was in fact the best road for driving in Romania.

In a 14-minute video, the journalist describes his Romanian roadtrip among the amazing gorges and the 'wonderful hairpins' appearing from nowhere. Having started his Transfagarasan trip in Pitesti, he said he enjoyed both sides of the road, up and down the mountain, but got frustrated because of the traffic on some portions of the road. “A great drivers' road, when it's empty,” he concluded.

Catchpole reminded of the popularity the road got after being mentioned on Top Gear, and suggested the Transfagarasan has become in some ways a victim of its own success. “When we were there, even the shepherds were Twitting about how busy it was,” he joked.

Next in their road trip was the Transalpina, the other high altitude road in Romania. Getting there was the harder part, as the driver had to go through some offroad areas. But once on the recently re-surfaced Transalpina, it was 'absolutely stunning'.

At an altitude of 2,145 meters, this is the highest road in Romania. “It's an amazing ' roof of the world feeling' on the road,"  said Henry Catchpole of Evo magazine, who believed it was an even better road than the Transfagarasan. “It really is a road that once seen, is never forgotten,” Catchpole said. “As for whether this is the best driving road in the world? Well, we will have to keep looking, won't we? “ he concluded.
