The British Minister for Europe David Lidington (in picture) will arrive in Bucharest on March 12 for a series of official visits and to talk about several important issues for Romania and the UK, including labor restrictions. “People in the UK, like in many other parts of Europe, want to be reassured that the benefits of freedom of movement for workers will not be threatened by abuses, such as people moving not to work but to access benefits and services in another Member State. That’s a general concern, not specific to particular countries or nationalities, and we need to address it with partners across Europe,” said the British Ambassador to Romania Martin Harris upon announcing the meetings.

Lidington will also be meeting with British investors and exploring the options for increasing the UK’s commercial presence in Romania’s economy.

David Lidington's two-day visit to Bucharest comes after a series of heated statements about the expected opening of labor market for Romanians and Bulgarians in the beginning of 2014.

Lidington, a British Conservative Party politician, was appointed Minister of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in May 2010. he was elected to Parliament in 1992 and is the Member of Parliament for Aylesbury.
