Bucharest at par with Rio de Janeiro in competitiveness hotspots ranking

Bucharest came 76th in the recent ranking of 120 hotspots for competitiveness in the world, issued by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The ranking takes into account criteria such as economic strength, physical capital, financial maturity, institutional effectiveness, social and cultural character, human capital, environmental and natural hazards and global appeal.

The Romanian capital was at par with Rio de Janeiro, but was outranked by most Central and Eastern European capitals. Prague was 46th, Warsaw, 53rd, Budapest, 55th, Athens- 72nd. In the European ranking, Bucharest came among last: 29th out of 31 cities. Only Ankara, Saint Petersburg and Kiev scored worse than Bucharest.

On the economic strength scale, Bucharest was better: 46th place, better than Prague and Vienna. For institutional effectiveness, the Romanian capital came 54th, again better than Prague and outranking Warsaw, Krakow and even Rome and Milan.

The world's economic competitiveness hotspot was New York, followed by London on the second place. Third came Singapore, followed by Hong Kong and Paris, at par on the fourth place. Tokyo, Zurich, Washington, Chicago and Boston completed the top 10.
