Bucharest deputy mayor unveils proposal to make Revolution Square pedestrian only
Revolution Square (Piata Revolutiei) in central Bucharest may become an area reserved for pedestrians after a proposal made by the city's deputy mayor Stelian Bujduveanu.
“We are referring to the area around the Romanian Athenaeum, which includes George Enescu Square, Revolution Square, and the parking lot in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This is the project we propose and launch for public debate,” he wrote in a recent Facebook post.
Bujduveanu says no one has so far made a plan for Bucharest to become more “people-friendly.”
“We want a people-friendly Bucharest, but no one has put a plan on paper or into practice. We want a city like those abroad, but we only have pedestrian zones on weekends and sidewalks turned into parking spaces,” he argued.
Bujduveanu says that more details will be available to the public in the coming period. His announcement was met with mixed reactions on social media, although most respondents were favorable to the proposal, asking for more green spaces to go along with the pedestrian area.
