Bucharest lists options for suspended highway, including 2-km tunnel under Herastrau

14 July 2011

The Bucharest municipality has listed three options for building a suspended highway which would connect various areas of Bucharest and make it easier to cross the city from one side to the other. In one of the options, the 16-kilometer highway would include a 2-kilometer tunnel under the Herastrau park, which is the favorite for Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu. The price for this option exceeds EUR 1.5 billion.

This express road will start from the North – East of Bucharest and cross the city to West, connecting the Petricani street, Pipera, Aerogarii boulevard, DN1, Calea Grivitei, the A1 highway and the south ring road.

The first option includes underground passages and costs EUR 600 million. The other two include the two-kilometer tunnel under Herastrau, while one of them features suspended roads on most of its length. The municipality, which has put these projects for public debate, hopes to start works at the beginning of next year and finish in two to three years.
