Bucharest’s Sector 3 mayor vows to plant 300 palm trees
Bucharest's Sector 3 City Hall will plant nearly 300 acclimatized palm trees within its administrative bounds, despite its run-ins with the General City Hall on the subject.
Sector 3 mayor Robert Negoiţă said in a press conference that some of the trees that were removed from Unirii Square at the orders of general mayor Nicusor Dan have been planted in front of the local administration headquarters and in Pantelimon Park. He also stated that the local authority has planted acclimatized olive trees in front of his office and in the courtyards of certain churches.
According to the mayor, the price of a palm tree did not exceed RON 1,000 (EUR 200) with VAT and transportation included, while the price of an over 100-year-old olive tree ranged from about EUR 500 to EUR 600.
When asked if he would plant palm trees in Unirii Square again, after the general mayor of Bucharest, Nicuşor Dan, ordered their removal, Negoiţă said that he will “plant as many trees as we can in this city because it needs as much green as possible,” according to Digi24.
Robert Negoiţă also stated that there was no local council decision regarding the purchase of olive and palm trees. "If you show me not just in Bucharest or in Romania, but in the world, a local council decision specifying what types of trees should be acquired, then we will issue a decision in this regard, but it doesn't exist," he said.
Bucharest general mayor Nicuşor Dan said in a recent press conference that the palm trees in Unirii Square were planted illegally. He added that the land on which Sector 3 City Hall worked is owned by the Bucharest City Hall and managed by the Street Administration, and as a result, any intervention should be carried out with their approval.
