Bucharest mayor wants Ronald Reagan’s statue in city center
Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea wants to place a statue of the former US president Ronald Reagan in downtown Bucharest, reports local News.ro.
She explained that she had chosen this project because Reagan represents a symbol of democracy, of the fight against communism and of the respect for human rights.
“This monument will be placed in the center of the city and I reassure all the citizens of Bucharest that cultural investments are not achieved at the expense of social projects, infrastructure, and health,” Firea said.
The project would be carried out by the Administration of Monuments and Tourism Heritage within the Bucharest City Hall.
Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the US. He introduced a neo-liberal policy, by reducing the welfare state and stimulating the economy with large tax cuts. He is considered by many a critical factor in winning the Cold War and defeating Communism.
Gabriela Firea, the 81th mayor of Bucharest, is part of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), known for supporting a large welfare state.
