Bucharest metro names stations after famous football players during UEFA Europa League final

07 May 2012

Inspired by a similar move at the London tube for this year's Olympics, the Bucharest metro company Metrorex changed the names of six of its stations during the upcoming Europa League final in Bucharest.

Between May 6 and 10 the six metro stations will be alternatively named Nicolae Dobrin (Victoriei station), Gică Hagi – the Obor station, Llorente- Piata Iancului station, Falcao- Piata Muncii station and Rică Răducanu – Dristor.

Signs with the new names will be placed in the metro stations, and Metrorex will also make announcement about the May 9 final in all metro stations. However, the announcements in the metro trains about upcoming stations will still use the existing names.

The metro will extend its schedule during the final night, when it will run until 01,00, compared to its usual 23,00 final hour.

King’s Cross metro station, one of the busiest metro stations in London will be named after famous Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, part of an Olympic makeover for the British capital, in the wake of the Olympic games this summer. The names of all 361 tube stations in London will change, taking the names of Olympic heroes. Romania will have five metro stations named after Romanian sportspeople: Nadia Comăneci, Ivan Patzaichin, Elisabeta Lipă, Iolanda Balaş and Georgeta Damian.
