Bucharest Opera artists celebrate European Opera Days with surprise performance at “Caru’ cu bere” restaurant

10 May 2011

Several artists and members of the chorus of the Bucharest National Opera performed on Saturday evening at the “Caru’ cu bere” restaurant in Bucharest disguised as waiters, bartenders, or simple consumers during an event aimed at promoting the opera music and at celebrating the European Days of Opera.

The artists performed Escamillo's part from the opera "Carmen", Habanera from the same musical composition, “Traviata” by Giuseppe Verdi and “The bat” by Johann Strauss. Organized by the "Friends of Opera" Association, with help from the Bucharest National Opera, this event was a premiere for Romania.

"Thus, a genre that can seem inaccessible to the general public, elitist or simply outdated, has proved attractive. The performers have shown that opera means emotion, beauty, joy, creativity and diversity”, said Gilda Lazar, president of the "Friends of the Opera" Association. “This happens in all the major European cities, so we decided to celebrate the European Days of Opera following their example.”, she also said.
