Bucharest plans 100 km of special lanes for public transport, 100 km of bike lanes

20 May 2014

The Bucharest Mayor’s Office aims to bring 60 percent of the people in Bucharest to use public transport for their commuting, from about 45 percent now, without imposing new taxes in order to ease traffic in the city, according to Ziarul Financiar.

One of the main measures the authorities have in mind is to continue building special lanes for public transport in order to make it faster and more predictable, in such a way that people know exactly how much they have to wait or how much it takes to get from one place to another, Ion Dedu, director of the Transport Department within the mayor’s office, said in the ZF Live business show.

He also said that in the next three years Bucharest will have over 100 kilometers of special lanes for public transport, compared to 10-12 kilometers now. He added that in two years Bucharest should also have 100 kilometers of special bike lanes.
