Bucharest City Hall wants statue of Nelson Mandela

27 July 2018

The Bucharest City Hall is to launch a contest for a statue of South African leader Nelson Mandela, to be placed in the city, News.ro reported.

The proposal was submitted by mayor Gabriela Firea at the request of the Public Monuments and Touristic Heritage Administration. The project is meant to emphasize the “multilateral cooperation” between Romania and South Africa.

The project was approved in the recent Bucharest General Council (CGMB) meeting with 32 votes in favor, 13 abstentions and 3 votes against.

As such, a contest will be launched to select the most representative contemporary work of art, statue or monumental ensemble, to be later placed in one of the city’s squares or parks.

South Africa celebrates this July 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela. The South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist served as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.
