Bucharest Stock Exchange index reaches highest level in almost six years

29 May 2014

The Bucharest Exchange Trade (BET) Index, which is the main index of the Romanian stock market, gained 1.6 percent on Thursday, May 29, and passed the 6,600 mark for the first time in almost six years, capitalizing on the positive sentiment on international markets.

Romanian stocks recovered vigorously in the last month after some weak four months. Since April 29, the BET, which follows the most important ten local companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), was up 5.3 percent.

Thursday's closing, at 6,662 points, was the highest level since June 25, 2008, before the financial crisis and the Lehman Brother bankruptcy ripple effect hit the Romanian market.

In the last year, the BET was up 21.6 percent.
