Bucharest theater festival to celebrate Romanian playwright Caragiale this summer

The first “Bucurestii lui Caragiale” Festival , organized in honor of the famous Romanian playwright Ion Luca Caragiale's centenary and running  under the motto "100 years-100 shows-100 personalities" takes place between June 9 and September 20, 2012 in Bucharest's old town and the Hala Traian area.

Over three months, the Bucharest public will have the opportunity to watch 100 acts that will revive the work of I.L. Caragiale and feature 100 artists of all generations.

The participating venues are the Comedy Theater, Metropolis Theater, Masca Theater, Nottara Theater, The National Opera Bucharest, The Center of Art Creation and Tradition, The National University of Theater and Film “I.L.Caragiale”, National Museum of Romanian Literature, Metropolitan Library of Bucharest, Circus Globus and the Library Academy.

There will be a daily program of events at “Hala Traian-La Conu’ Iancu” and the Historical Center Stage, in both locations at various hours during the afternoon. More info about the festival can be found on festivalcaragiale.ro (in Romanian only) while the participating theaters can provide information on ticket prices.

Ion Luca Caragiale born on February 13, 1852, in the village Haimanale, Prahova county, was a playwright, novelist, pamphleteer, poet, writer, theater director, Romanian political commentator and journalist. Of Greek origin, he is considered to be the biggest Romanian playwright and one of the most important Romanian writers. He was posthumously elected to the Romanian Academy.
