Govt. allots EUR 54 mln to organize the European Parliament elections in Romania

28 February 2019

The Government allotted a budget of RON 252,732,000 (EUR 54.3 million) to cover the costs of organizing the European Parliament elections in Romania.

The event takes place on May 26 and candidacies need to be submitted by March 28.

The funds will be divided between the institutions that are responsible for organizing the elections, namely the Internal Affairs Ministry, the Government’s General Administration, the Permanent Electoral Authority, the Foreign Affairs Minister, and the Special Telecommunications Service.

Several rules concerning the free, fair and secure organization of the elections were also established. The Permanent Electoral Authority, together with the Special Telecommunications Service and the National Statistics Institute are tasked with implementing the IT system monitoring voters’ turnout and preventing illegal voting (SIMPV). The Permanent Electoral Authority, with the support of the Special Telecommunications Service, will provide the IT equipment and services used by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) to centralize the results of the vote. The counting of the votes in the voting sections by the members of the electoral bureaus will be recorded video and audio.

The political parties taking part in the elections and the independent candidates can appoint people that can check, including during the day of the vote, the IT app used by BEC to centralize the results of the vote.
