Bulgaria and Romania, last in EU for consumption
Bulgaria and Romania had the lowest actual individual consumption in the European Union last year expressed in Purchasing Power Standards (PPS).
The two countries also had the lowest GDP per capita in PPS, namely almost half of the average recorded in all the EU member states, according to EU’s statistical office Eurostat.
In Bulgaria, the actual individual consumption reached 51% of the EU average, whereas in Romania the indicator amounted to 57% of the EU average. Countries like Luxembourg or Germany saw the highest individual consumption levels, of 141%, respectively 123% of the EU average.
As for the GDP per capita based on purchasing power, Romania ranks second to last in the EU, with 55% of the EU average, whereas Bulgaria ranks last with 47% of the EU average.
