Bulgarian EU funds minister wants five bridge connections to Romania over the Danube
Bulgaria wants at least five bridges over the Danube, connecting it to Romania, argued Bulgarian EU Funds Minister Tomislav Donchev. He met his Romanian counterpart Leonard Orban to talk about cooperation on EU funds absorption up until 2020.
"In my opinion, it is a shame to speak about two bridges between two EU member states with such intensive trade relations. It is even a shame to speak about three bridges. There need to be at least five bridges,” said Donchev. He also assured that Bulgaria will be a first-class European country by 2020.
Romania supports the idea of building a new bridge over the Danube, to Ruse in Bulgaria, as it would contribute to population mobility and help businesses, according to the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT).
Romania and Bulgaria agreed in 2000 to build a second bridge over the Danube, connecting Calafat and Vidin, but work on this project is ongoing.
