Călin Peter Netzer's film is only Romanian competition contender at Berlin Film Festival
Only one Romanian film will be in this year's Berlin Film Festival, running from February 7 to 17. Călin Peter Netzer's Poziţia copilului/Child's Pose is in the official selection of the 63rd Berlinale and will compete against another 18 films from around the world for the festival's awards – the Golden and Silver Bear statuettes.
Director Călin Peter Netzer is no stranger to film festivals and awards. Two of his previous films Maria (2003 ) and Medalia de onoare/Medal of Honor (2009 ) received nominations and awards at a number of festivals, including the Bratislava, Chicago, Miami, Locarno, Thessaloniki and Torino film festivals. Child's Pose, which tells the story of an overbearing mother's relationship with her adult son, stars some well known names from Romanian cinema, Luminita Gheorghiu (The Death of Mr. Lazarescu) and Bogdan Dumitrache (Best Intentions). The cast also includes Natasa Raab, Ilinca Goia, Florin Zamfirescu, Cerasela Iosifescu, Mimi Branescu and Vlad Ivanov.
There are plenty of big names at this year's festival with Wong Kar Wai's kung fu biopic The Grandmaster to open the event. Also screening are Steven Soderberg's Side Effects, starring Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Gus Van Sant's Promised Land and Night Train to Lisbon, with Jeremy Irons and Christopher Lee.
